Caring for natural stone.

Natural stone is one of the most durable materials in the world — quarried from the earth and shaped to last lifetimes. A little routine care keeps it looking exactly as it should.

Daily cleaning

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. For light grease or residue, a small amount of pH-neutral dish soap diluted in warm water is sufficient. Dry thoroughly after wiping — avoid letting water pool on the surface.

What to avoid

Never use vinegar, lemon juice, bleach or abrasive cleaners. Acids etch the surface of marble, travertine and sandstone. Avoid placing hot pans directly on marble or sandstone surfaces.

Sealing

Porous stones — sandstone, travertine and marble — benefit from sealing once a year. Use a penetrating stone sealer (available at most hardware stores). Apply evenly, allow to absorb, wipe off excess. Granite and onyx rarely need sealing.

Stains

Act quickly. Blot (do not rub) spills immediately with a clean cloth. For stubborn stains, a poultice of baking soda and water left overnight can draw out oil-based marks. For severe staining, contact us and we will advise.

Outdoor pieces

Sandstone and granite are well suited to outdoor use. Cover or store indoor-grade pieces during heavy monsoon or frost seasons. Re-seal outdoor stone every 6 months.
